Bicycle officer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bicycle Commissioner (also: Radverkehrsbeauftragter , in Switzerland: Velobeauftragter , Velofachstelle ) is an employee responsible for all matters relating to bicycle traffic (or an administrative unit) in a municipality , city or district administration , in individual federal states also in a ministry , in Switzerland also in cantons . This is usually a full-time job, but in individual cases it can also be on a voluntary basis.

The competencies are regulated differently depending on the local conditions. In Leipzig, for example, a service instruction assigns the bicycle officer the following tasks, among other things: management in a bicycle traffic working group , all planning for bicycle traffic and the countersignature of all new and renovated roads as well as public relations work for bicycle traffic.

In other municipalities, the tasks also include:

  • Bicycle-friendly traffic regulation
  • Road safety for cyclists
  • Documentation of development and activities
  • Coordination of cycling activities of the various clubs and institutions
  • Planning and implementation of events with bicycles and for bicycle traffic
  • Bicycle in the environmental network ( bike and ride , bicycle transport , bicycle rental systems )

There are bicycle officers in Germany in at least 12 state authorities and in at least 64 cities or districts. For Switzerland, an overview of the tasks of bicycle specialist centers and possible assignments within the administration is given in a publication of the Velokonferenz from 2012. In Austria, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management employs a bicycle traffic coordinator. Activities at the state level differ from state to state. Full-time bicycle traffic officers are employed in Vienna and other cities.
