Vehicle owner identification

The vehicle keeper marking (or keeper code, English Vehicle Keeper Marking, VKM ) is a code with a maximum of five letters that uniquely identifies vehicle owners of railway vehicles in Europe and some countries in Asia and North Africa. The holder codes must be requested from OTIF or ERA . The current list is published monthly on the homepages of both organizations.

The vehicle keeper marking as well as in the manner prescribed by EU law national vehicle registration ( National Vehicle Register NVR registered). The vehicle owner and the person responsible for maintenance ( Entity in Charge of Maintenance, ECM ) do not have to be identical with the keeper ; however, both can also be entered in the vehicle register.

According to the Uniform Technical Regulations on the Identification of Railway Vehicles, the vehicle owner identification must be written on the vehicle together with the unique vehicle number and a country code that corresponds to the license plate .

UIC rule until 2005

Until 2005, the owner or keeper of a vehicle could be read directly from the vehicle number. However, this was limited to UIC member railways, the other companies could not use the system or had to be assigned a number by a member railroad. The North American railways have a comparable reporting mark that clearly identifies the vehicle owner with four letters. In contrast to the European system, the reporting mark is part of the unique vehicle identification, which means that the following number can appear at every company.
