Faith and the Muse is an American dark wave band.

history

The band was founded in 1993 in Los Angeles by the artist duo Monica Richards and William Faith . Before joining forces for the Faith and the Muse project, both Richards and Faith had band experience in the gothic rock and post-punk scene of the 1980s. While Richards had sung for the band Strange Boutique , Faith was active for scene greats such as Shadow Project , Christian Death , Mephisto Walz and Sex Gang Children .

Her debut album Elyria , which has followed six other releases to date, was released in 1994. The music style of the band is difficult to define because it is very versatile and reflects the most diverse influences - for example from the folkloric, electronic, alternative and neoclassical areas. With such a wide spectrum, the band lives up to its own claim to a performance that transcends temporal and cultural boundaries. Most of the songs are sung by Richards, although Faith makes a vocal contribution to at least one song on each album.

For the past 15 years, Faith and the Muse have toured extensively in the US and Europe. They have also performed several times at major alternative music events such as the M'era Luna Festival and the Wave-Gotik-Treffen . While the duo write and record their songs alone, they always get the support of other musicians for performances. Faith and the Muse's live performances are popular with fans for their variety. They vary from quiet acoustic sessions to theatrical-orchestral productions to straightforward rock concerts.

Faith and the Muse's releases are often reminiscent of concept albums , as some reflect a certain aspect of a foreign culture. For example, literature, dance, music, religion and other world views are taken up and processed musically. Especially the current album : ankoku butoh:, on which the artists deal with elements of the Japanese Shinto religion, testifies to the broad spectrum of the band. Traditional Japanese instruments like Taiko drums create a Far Eastern atmosphere on the musical level and make the album a total work of art .

Monica Richards also supported the gothic rock band The Eden House , a joint project of former Fields of the Nephilim member Tony Pettitt and Steve Carey, with her vocals on their first album Smoke & Mirrors (2009).

During the Ankoku Butoh tour, Richards and Faith separated. Whether the band will still exist in the future is therefore open, even if an official breakup has not yet been announced. Richards, who is now musically active with horror comic star Steve Niles , presented the EP Strange Familiar in spring 2011 . Their album Naiades was released in early 2012 .
