The Falkirk Old Parish Church , also Falkirk Old & St Modan's Parish Church , is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish city of Falkirk in the council area of the same name . In 1960 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest category A took place in 2004.

history

It is possible that there has been a church at this location since the 6th century, which St. Modan is said to have founded. A building in the 11th century is secured. This coincides with the date 1057 on a stone in the church. However, it is certain that this stone was only made in the 19th century, which is why the year of construction is doubtful. In 1166 the church was assigned to Holyrood Monastery .

The oldest fragments of today's church date from the 15th century and were probably built around 1450. It was a nave with a transept . The bell tower was over the crossing . The upper part of the tower was torn down in 1738 and rebuilt by 1741 according to a design by William Adam . In the 1790s the church proved to be too small for the growing congregation, which is why a new building was discussed. At the beginning of the 19th century it was therefore decided to build a new building. For this purpose, the building with the exception of the bell tower was demolished. The work, which cost around £ 3,500 in total, was designed by James Gillespie Graham and completed in 1811. In 1893 a building designed by Robert Rowand Anderson was added. In the mid-1980s, the parish merged with the neighboring parish of St Modan's to form Falkirk Old & St Modan's Parish Church .
