The false cat sharks (Proscylliidae) are a family of sharks from the order of the basic sharks , to which a total of three genera and seven species belong.
Like all ground sharks, the false cat sharks have
- five gill slits
- an anal fin
- two dorsal fins without thorns
- and a nictitating membrane over the eyes.
They differ from the cat sharks , to which they are very similar in external form, in that the first dorsal fin begins almost immediately behind the pectoral fin.
False cat sharks live predominantly in deep water on the edge of the continental shelf and the slopes of the continental shelf. Little is known about their exact distribution areas as well as about the individual genera and species.
They are small sharks that do not grow longer than 1.2 meters and mainly feed on crustaceans and small fish. Some species such as the harlequin dogfish ( Ctenacis mismanni ), which has only been found off Somalia , or the Cuban dogfish ( Eridacnis barbouri ), whose distribution is restricted to the Caribbean region between Florida and Cuba , give rise to the assumption that the wrong ones Cat sharks only occur occasionally.
