Device in use by the Dutch Army

The folding road is a device of the pioneer troops of the army of the Bundeswehr . It enables road vehicles to drive on sandy, boggy or snow-covered terrain and can also be used to secure storage areas. Laying on the bottom of a body of water is also possible up to a water depth of 1.20 meters.

A set of mats (50 meters long, 4.20 meters wide) consists of 18 folding road sections measuring 2.77 meters x 4.20 meters, with each section in turn made up of 558 standard panels, 180 special panels, 144 half panels with matching bars, 162 joints and 20 tensioning clamps consists.

The individual segments consist of hexagonal cast aluminum plates that are firmly but not rigidly connected to one another. So you can adapt to the ground a little. They are alternately clamped by hooks and eyes and can be folded through 180 °. Large areas of the surfaces are coated with a non-slip plastic coating.

The folding road together with the MAN truck 15 t mil gl as a folding road transporter / laying machine results in the folding road device (FSG). Several folding lines can be coupled next to one another and one behind the other. Laying is carried out with the carrier vehicle moving backwards over the roll bar at the rear, and resuming accordingly in forward driving.

In order to realize curve radii and wider evasive areas, elements can also be laid overlapping or supplemented by installing additional individual panels.

The manufacturer was the Linke-Hofmann-Busch company in Salzgitter-Watenstedt, and the folding road laying system was developed by  Krauss-Maffei . The Bundeswehr procured a prototype in 1985, and the 147 series vehicles were added in 1988 after the technical delivery conditions had been set in March 1987.

The folding road laying system is also used in other armed forces, in Austria with the same, in France, the Netherlands and Great Britain on different carrier vehicles.
