The Familiarité is a religious community as they often consisted in the Franche-Comté and in the Bresse, which is actually a community of acolytes acted.

Familiarité was particularly widespread in Franche-Comté , but also in neighboring Bresse and in Burgundy in general. The Familiarité was a community of acolytes who supported the priest at mass and also took on the office of cantor . Depending on the importance of the church , the Familiarité consisted of more or fewer members. In some places there were regulations that regulated the rights and duties of the family.

membership

As a rule, an applicant for membership in the Familiarité had to be a descendant of a citizen of the relevant municipality; often the parents had to be naturalized expressly before the applicant was born. In addition, the candidate must have been baptized in the church to which the Familiarité belonged. An applicant was usually tested on the singing abilities, he had to master the Gregorian chant , in particular , after a trial period of at least three months, he was finally accepted. In addition, he usually had to pay an admission fee. Now he was addressed as Messire (gracious lord). The family members support the priest in all church services, especially in private masses and foundations , which were extremely numerous. For example, in 1729 there were 411 foundations in the Church of Clerval .

Community rights and obligations

The families usually had a weekly service, during which they had to accompany all services and sing at high mass . The family also had to do the ringing (in Clerval in summer at 5:30 a.m. and at 7:30 a.m. for high mass, in winter half an hour later, plus the Vespers service at 3:00 p.m.). A separate mass was held for the families one hour before the high mass. Foreign priests were not permitted to perform church activities unless the priest responsible was present. A monthly meeting of the Familiarité took place, at which all matters were discussed under the chairmanship of the priest. Resolutions could only be passed with a simple majority of all members of the Familiarité. The property of the Familiarité was administered by one of the Familiar, the priest and the mayor of the city. The income from the altar foundations usually went to the Familiarité, who distributed it evenly among themselves. If several altar foundations were to be held in one day, the youngest families began, then the older ones and the oldest finally accompanied the last masses.
