Faouzi Mansouri ( Arabic فوزي منصوري; * January 17, 1956 in Menzel Bourguiba , Tunisia ) is a former Algerian soccer player who spent his entire career with French clubs, but played internationally for his home country.

Club career

Mansouri lived in Algeria as a young child until he and his parents fled to the south of France due to the Algerian War. As a youth he played for Olympique Nîmes and moved up in 1974 under coach Kader Firoud at the age of 18 in the first division team. In the first two seasons he was only used sporadically in a team around players like the French international Bernard Boissier , but was able to establish himself in the team during the 1976/77 season. Although Mansouri could appear as a versatile player in midfield, he was ousted again in the following period until he played no role in the 1979/80 season with a single contested game at Nîmes.

As a result, he turned his back on the club in 1980 and signed with the second division AS Béziers . Unlike before in Nîmes, he was one of the top performers there, which helped him return to the first division a year later when HSC Montpellier signed the player. In the relegation battle with Montpellier, it was above all Patrick Baldassara's injury that enabled him to play regularly. In 1982 he had to accept relegation to the second division and could then continue to occupy the left side of defense.

In 1983, the Algerian signed with league rivals FC Mulhouse , where he made relatively frequent appearances over the course of two years, but failed in promotion. In 1985 he returned to his still second-rate former club from Montpellier; because he had to share the defensive position with his compatriot Radouane Abbes , he could no longer establish himself permanently in the team and also missed promotion. A year after his return, Mansouri decided in 1986 at the age of 30 after 77 first division games with two goals and 111 second division games with five goals to end his career. He let this end for two more years with a lower class club from Uzès near Nîmes. He later went back to Algeria and devoted himself to training young footballers there.

National team

On October 13, 1981, Mansouri made his debut for the selection of his home country when the Algerian national team beat Nigeria 2-0 . A few months later he was considered for the 1982 World Cup , during which he was on the field in all three group matches; as a result of the shame of Gijón , he left with his team at the end. Apart from various friendship and qualification games, he took part in the African Championship in 1984 and 1986 and came third in 1984. Following the end of his career in 1986, he was appointed to the squad for the 1986 World Cup in the summer of the same year . Again he ran on in all games and was eliminated with Algeria after the preliminary round. The 3-0 defeat in the last group match against Spain on June 13 was also his last of 22 official internationals in which he scored a goal. There were also eleven unofficial games against club teams.
