Patrick Baldassara (born July 25, 1952 in Lyon ) is a former French football player and later coach .

Career

As a youth player, Baldassara belonged to the Juniors of Olympique Lyon and in 1971 won the Coupe Gambardella with them . During the season 1972/73 he was in the squad of the first division team, but did not get beyond two contested games. Accordingly, he was not involved in the trophy success of his team in 1973. Due to strong competition from the national player Raymond Domenech , the situation for the player remained similar in the following two years; At the beginning of the 1975/76 season, however, he made the breakthrough. This was slowed down because Lyon was in a relegation battle and replaced coach Aimé Mignot in February 1976 by Aimé Jacquet , who did not trust Baldassara any further. Accordingly, the full-back was awarded to the second division AS Angoulême in the summer of the same year , for which he could regularly appear. The situation in Lyon was unchanged after his return, however, when he did not come more than three missions during the 1977/78 season.

As a result, the player turned his back on Lyon in 1978 and signed in the second division with HSC Montpellier . For three years he occupied a regular place there and fought with the team for promotion, which was achieved in 1981. A return to the top French league as a regular player, however, was denied him, which was triggered by a serious injury. Since he had lost his place to Faouzi Mansouri , he had to leave Montpellier in 1982 and at the same time ended his career as a professional at the age of 29 after 40 first division games and 117 second division games with two goals each.

Baldassara continued his career at third division club SC Orange, for which he was on the field until 1984. Immediately afterwards he took over the coaching position at a lower-class club from Tarbes and continued to play as a player. While he finally ended his playing career in 1987, he continued the coaching office until 1989 and brought the club promotion to the fourth division. He held the office again from 2001 to 2004 and temporarily in 2009.
