               Farfler's hand-cranked vehicle

Stephan Farfler (born November 12, 1633 in Altdorf near Nuremberg ; † October 24, 1689 in Altdorf or Nuremberg ) was a watchmaker who, according to several reports, built two vehicles with a hand crank drive.

According to Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr , Farfler suffered an accident at the age of three and was paralyzed afterwards. Others describe him as a person with "crippled" legs. In 1655 he constructed a three-wheeled vehicle, which he propelled with hand cranks via a gear transmission. A short time later he built himself a four-wheeled vehicle with a similar drive.

Vehicles that had previously been designed by Hans Hautsch in Nuremberg from 1649 onwards , including an ambulance elevator and two crank-operated magnificent cars, could serve as a model .

The scholar Johann Christoph Wagenseil wrote in 1695 that Farfler's car was exhibited in the Nuremberg City Library after his death. He paid tribute to Farfler's invention and had small wooden models of the car made for people in high positions. According to Johann Georg Keyßler, a model of the three-wheeled car was in the possession of Doppelmayr. The Handbook of inventions called Farfler a "famous watchmaker." The original of the car was shown in Nuremberg in the 18th century.
