Johann Georg Keyßler

Johann Georg Keyßler (* 1693 in Thurnau ; † 1743 on Gut Stintenburg (today Zarrentin am Schaalsee )) was a German tutor , archaeologist and travel writer . The polyhistor is considered to be the nestor of German research in early history .

After studying in Halle , he was court master in the service of Count Giech in Thurnau and from 1716 on with Count Andreas Gottlieb von Bernstorff in Gartow . With the sons and grandchildren of the counts, he made numerous trips to the neighboring states of Germany. His students included u. a. Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff and his brother Andreas Gottlieb the Younger. His travelogues today offer an authentic source for geographical features such as monuments, museums, cultural and natural history sights. But he also went into the political and economic conditions, which is why they were significantly reduced by the censorship . His descriptions are written in letter form.

Keyßler had been a member of the Royal Society since 1719 .
