Farhat Bengdara

Farhat Omar Bengdara ( Arabic فرحاتعمربنقداره) (Born September 27, 1965 in Benghazi ) is a Libyan politician and banker and currently Governor of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL).

Bengdara holds a BA in Economics from Garyounis University in Benghazi and a Masters in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Sheffield , Sheffield . From 1998 to 2000 he was a member of the Management Committee of Wahda Bank . From 200-2006 he served as Lieutenant Governor of the Libyan Central Bank,

Bengdara has been a director of the Arab Banking Corporation (ABC) since 2001 . He has 18 years of experience in banking and other business areas. He is also Vice Chairman of ABC in Egypt and Chairman of ABC International Bank plc in London. He is also a board member of the Libyan Investment Authority , the Libyan sovereign wealth fund. Since 2009 he has been a board member of UniCredit SpA

In February 2011, Bengara fled Libya to Istanbul. In March 2011 the EU imposed sanctions on the Libyan central bank, whereupon Bengara tried to maintain the Libyan central bank's ability to act. In September 2011, together with other Libyan bankers, he offered help to the rebels in Libya in order to restore the banking sector.
