features

The fish have an extremely elongated and slender body that resembles a long, thin branch. The head is elongated by a long and narrow rostrum , which in males is lined with bristles. The mouth is below. The dorsal and anal fin are exactly opposite one another. The caudal fin sits on a long caudal stalk and usually ends in long filaments. Most species are brown in color with a dark brown longitudinal stripe on each side, which begins at the tip of the rostrum and extends over the eyes to the tail. The longitudinal ligament is often interrupted at the tail stalk and consists only of individual spots. Farlowella species grow to be 4 to 10 inches long.
