The Faro de Punta Delgada is a lighthouse on the uninhabited to Spain belonging Canary Island Alegranza , north before Lanzarote .

History and technology

The lighthouse stands on a narrow headland in the far east of the island. Its light exceeds the sector from 135 ° to 045 °. Construction began on April 12, 1861. Four years later, on April 30, 1865, the tower was put into operation. The entire structure was built by hand with cuboid natural stones and is accessible via a jetty.

The system with a square building floor plan accommodated the families of the two lighthouse keepers and had rooms for the maintenance of the beacon system. The living room is laid out around a central courtyard with its own cistern for drinking water supply. Due to the low rainfall, the water was insufficient to supply the two families, so another cistern was built 20 meters from the lighthouse to collect water from the mountains. In 1905 the beacon was electrified. Since 1999, the system has been operated with solar collectors that supply a 150 watt halogen lamp via batteries.

The entire complex of the Faro de Punta Delgada was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) by the government of the Canary Islands on December 20, 2002 and placed under monument protection.
