The lighthouse was built by order of Dom Pedro II on the easternmost headland of the Ilha do Mel, the Ponta das Conchas. The 17.6 meter high structure is made of cast iron and was prefabricated by a company in Glasgow . After being erected on the Ponta das Conchas, the beacon went into operation on March 25, 1872. Today it is operated with photovoltaics and the identifier consists of a white flash with a return of ten seconds (Fl.W.10s).
The Farol das Conchas stands in a nature reserve and is a popular lookout point , although the tower itself cannot be visited. In 1997 the film A Ostra eo Vento ( German Die Auster und der Wind ) was shot at the lighthouse .
