The Hettinger Narrenburg

The Fastnachtsmuseum Narrenburg is located near Hettingen Castle in Hettingen in the Sigmaringen district in Baden-Württemberg . The museum building was built on the remains of the tithe barn belonging to the castle, of which the outer walls were still present. There are European Fastnachts - Carnival and Carnival customs presented. On the lower floor there is an exhibition on Carnival in the Alb - Lauchert region , and there are also special exhibitions on related topics.

The idea for the establishment came from the Alb-Lauchert-Narrenring (ALN). After about two and a half years of construction, the museum was opened in September 2006. Meanwhile 15 guilds of the fool's ring are involved. The museum council consists of eight people who are responsible for the care of the exhibited figures, for the further development and for the organization of special exhibitions. The incumbent president of the fool's ring is in charge.

In addition to the Carnival in the Alb-Lauchert region, the main focus here is on Carnival customs from all over Europe. Modern means not only document, but also give a deeper insight into the meaning and background of this phenomenon. In changing special exhibitions, different topics are illuminated that deal with customs, art, Mardi Gras, Mardi Gras and Carnival.

As part of European integration, the museum wants to show similarities and differences between cultures across national borders. Europe is not only viewed as a historical phenomenon, but also as a living cultural area that is subject to constant change despite traditions.

Among other things, Swiss carnival customs can be seen in the permanent exhibition. Here, for example, the Lötschentaler Tschäggättä , the Basler Fasnacht and the Laufenburg Narrone are presented. The Nassereither Schellerlauf and Imster Schemenlaufen from Tyrol are represented in the exhibition. The Venice Carnival and other Italian forms of Mardi Gras and Carnival form another aspect of the exhibition. Carnival customs from Eastern Europe, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Greece and Belgium can also be discovered in the museum.

Of course, German carnival customs are also presented, such as the Mittenwald carnival and the Swabian-Alemannic carnival with the Elzacher Schuttigs, the Donaueschinger Hansel, the Endinger Jokili and many other historical carnival characters.

Special exhibitions

From March 7th to November 14th 2011 a special exhibition in the Narrenburg is dedicated to the “ Venetian Carnival ”.
In 2010 the special exhibition with the theme “Plätzle-, Fleckle-, Spättleshäs”, ie special, historically very old forms of the carnival häs, took place. The costumes of over 30 fools guilds were exhibited.
Before that, there were other special exhibitions: Between February and October 2008, under the title “The Bear Dances”, the museum shed light on how animals became the theme of Carnival and what role they play in customs. In autumn 2009 the “Metzler miniature exhibition” was on view in the Narrenburg, which consisted of 145 approximately 50 cm tall dolls by a regional artist, who are dressed in costumes of the regional guilds, which are faithfully reproduced. A witch exhibition with witches from the near and far area in 2009 also attracted a lot of attention. Another exhibition showed masks designed by pupils from the Sigmaringen district.
