Hettingen Castle
The Schloss Hettingen is a castle zurückzuführendes 11th-century building in Hettingen in Baden-Wuerttemberg Sigmaringen district in Germany .
location
The palace complex is located east of the city, on a rocky ridge around 40 meters above the city in the Lauchert valley .
history
The Counts of Gammertingen had the castle built around 1120. As the oldest part of today's castle, the porch from that time has been preserved.
From 1240 to 1311 the castle was owned by the Counts of Veringen , and in 1267 it was first mentioned in a document as "castrum". The counts had the castle expanded into their headquarters and a military fortress, but had to pledge it to the County of Reichenau until 1374. In 1447 the castle was sold to Count Ulrich von Württemberg , who, due to lack of interest, sold it on to the von Bubenhofen brothers in 1466 .
After the castle had been expanded into the headquarters of a Bubenhofer branch, it had to be sold to Dietrich Speth in 1524 for financial reasons. Because of its expansion, the castle complex was first referred to as a castle .
Around 1720, Baron Franz-Anton von Speth had the residential building of today's Hettingen Castle built.
In the possession of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen princes , who bought the entire private property of the Barons von Speth in 1827, the castle served until 1978 as a factory building, forester's house, apartment for Countess von Spee and as refugee accommodation.
In 1978 the city of Hettingen bought the castle, had it renovated between 1991 and 1994 for 4.24 million DM and used it as a town hall. During the renovation, paintings were exposed, stucco ceilings - partly from the Rococo period around 1770 - were renewed and the old, three-flight oak staircase was preserved.
The permanent exhibition “Architectures in Clay” by the artist Sybille Ritter has been on view in the south wing since 2004. Twice a year, art and cultural events take place, authors present their new books, and once a year, on the last weekend in August, an open-air rock concert takes place in the palace gardens.
The castle complex also includes the former tithe barn , which today houses the “Narrenburg” carnival museum.
