Bridges of Edirne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Edirne Bridges are a series of Ottoman-era bridges in the Turkish city .

Due to the city's location in the semicircular arch of the Tunça River , various stone arch bridges have been built over the centuries . From north to south downstream these are:

  • The Kanuni Bridge (named after Kanuni Sultan Suleyman , Sultan Suleyman the Legislator ) continues the connection between the old palace and the city. It was built in 1553/54 under Suleyman I by the builder Sinan . The bridge leads in an elongated vault over four slightly pointed arches, which only meet the pillars below the normal water level and thus appear very flat. The three pillars have no openings, but are protected against the current by triangular heads. The total of 65 m long bridge (43 m between the abutments) was completely renovated in 2007 ( 41 ° 41 ′ 13.5 ″  N , 26 ° 33 ′ 31.4 ″  E ).
  • The Saraçhane Bridge (also Şahabettin-Paşa Bridge , named after the Beylerbey of Rumelia ; also Sultan Mustafa Bridge, named after Mustafa II or Horozlu (Hahn) Bridge) at the southern end of the Palace Garden Island was built as a connection between the Palace and the city built. It is 120 m long and 5 m wide and crosses the river in a flat curve over 10 arches of different sizes. This bridge was also extensively restored in 2007 ( 41 ° 41 ′ 8.1 ″  N , 26 ° 33 ′ 15.7 ″  E ).
Yalnizgoz Bridge in the foreground and Bayezid Bridge in the background
  • The Bayezid Bridge (Turkish: II. Bayezid köprüsü , named after Sultan Bayezid II. ) And the Yalnizgoz Bridge connect Sultan Bayezit II Külliyesi with the city. The Bayezid Bridge, built in 1488 by the builder Hayrettin, spans the branch of the Tundscha with six arches ( 41 ° 41 ′ 3.6 ″  N , 26 ° 32 ′ 38.7 ″  E ). The Yalnizgoz Bridge, built over the other arm of the river in 1567 with only one larger arch and seven passages, has more of the character of a dam to regulate the river and also goes back to Sinan ( 41 ° 40 ′ 57.8 ″  N , 26 ° 32 ′ 48 ″  O ).
Gazi Mihal Bridge with a new reinforced concrete bridge in the background
  • The Gazi Mihal Bridge in the west of the city center stands on the site of an earlier Roman bridge, but only a few stones that were used for other purposes remained. In the 15th century a bridge was built there by Gazi Mihal Bey, which was replaced in the 19th century by the current bridge, which measures 190 m from one side of the flood bed to the other and consists of a long series of segmental arches ( 41 ° 40 ′ 35.8 "  N , 26 ° 32 '30"  E ). Due to the volume of traffic on the D 100, a reinforced concrete bridge was later built a few meters next to it.
  • A steel railway bridge from the 20th century crosses the Tundscha a few hundred meters further south.
Ekmekcioglu Ahmet Pasha Bridge
New bridge or Meriç bridge
  • The Ekmekcioglu Ahmet Pascha Bridge over the Tundscha (also simply called Tunca Köprüsü, Tunca Bridge ) and the New Bridge over the Meriç ( Meriç Köprüsü, Meriç Bridge ) connect the city center with the south and still serve the trunk road to this day Greece as a river crossing. The Tunca Bridge was built between 1607 and 1615. It has eight round arches and is 135 m long ( 41 ° 40 ′ 4.3 ″  N , 26 ° 33 ′ 15 ″  E ). Two arches were destroyed in the Second World War and long replaced by a makeshift structure made of steel. They were only rebuilt true to the original during the renovation in 2007. The Meriç Bridge, although it looks older, wasn't built until 1842. With a total length of 235 m and twelve round arches with openings above the pillars, it is the longest of the bridges in Edirne ( 41 ° 39 ′ 48.4 ″  N , 26 ° 33 ′ 7.7 ″  E ).
