Fatih Mosque (Speyer-Nord)

The Fatih Mosque Speyer (Turkish: Fatih Camii Speyer , literally Conqueror Mosque Speyer) is a prayer and meeting center of the Turkish - Islamic community and cultural center Speyer ( DITIB Speyer) in the Brunckstraße 16, in the industrial area north between Speyer districts Speyer- North and Speyer-West . The congregation has been using the building for prayer since April 2012 .

The building complex of 550 m² on the 3000 m² property, the construction of which was started in 2011, consists of the actual prayer room, a ritual washroom, community and youth rooms, executive office and kitchen as well as an apartment for the Imam and his family. The building is adorned at the main entrance by a small dome and four symbolic minarets . The dome and minarets are crowned by golden crescent moons.

At the time the mosque was built, the community had around 170 member families. The construction costs amounted to 500,000 euros. The building itself was largely built by volunteers. 30 volunteers removed 450 tons of soil from the outside area. According to the council, many craftsmen donated all or part of the material and labor. A photovoltaic system has been in operation on the roof since April 2012.

Previous mosque

Before moving the common prayer to Brunckstraße, the Turkish-Islamic community used a building in Johannesstraße in the center of Speyer as a mosque from 1984.

The name

The name Fatih Mosque takes up the name of the Fatih Mosque in Istanbul . The Fatih Mosque was the first monumental mosque construction project of the Ottoman Empire after the conquest of Constantinople , the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire by Fatih Sultan Mehmed II (Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror). After the Hagia Sophia , which was once converted into a mosque, became a museum under Kemal Ataturk , the monumental Fatih Mosque has a special identity-creating power for Turkish Muslims and hangs as a picture in many households and restaurants of Turkish immigrants in Germany.
