Faust Quadrille

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Faust Quadrille is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn . It was first performed on May 11, 1864 in Pavlovsk , Russia.

Remarks

The Quadrille was created in 1864 during the composer's annual trip to Russia. It was composed based on themes from the opera Faust by Charles Gounod and played a number of times in Russia. Nevertheless, the work is a mystery. On the one hand, it is unclear why Johann Strauss wrote this work, which corresponds to a quadrille with the same name and thematic content of his brother Josef , at all. He might as well have played his brother's 1861 work in Russia. On the other hand, it is also not clear why the work was only published in Russia, and only as a piano reduction. It is also unclear whether it was played outside of Russia at the time. The indication of the opus number is also confusing. The quadrille is occasionally given the opus number 277. However, this quadrille is not listed in the regular catalog of works by Johann Strauss. Opus 277 is there the Polka Invitation a la Polka-Mazur . The fact that the work was not included in the official Vienna directory of works by Johann Strauss (son) suggests that the work was not known in Vienna. In the long term, none of the Strauss brothers' two Faust quadrilles could hold up. They were soon forgotten.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 6 minutes and 17 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
