Federal Medical Center (Rochester)
The Federal Medical Center ("FMC Rochester") is a prison in Rochester , Minnesota . It reports to the United States' Federal Bureau of Prisons . It specializes in physiotherapy and psychological care for around 900 inmates.
The Federal Medical Center grew out of the former Rochester State Hospital and is on the outskirts of Rochester. In 1983 the Federal Bureau of Prisons took over the grounds from Olmsted County . The official opening of the prison took place in 1985. In special programs, the prisoners are given various opportunities to actively work on their rehabilitation .
Known inmates were television preacher Jim Bakker and former presidential candidate Lyndon LaRouche , who was convicted of credit fraud and conspiracy in 1989. Even Omar Abdel-Rahman , leader of the Islamist Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya , was temporarily housed in Rochester. However, he was transferred to a higher security prison.
