The Federal public defender (FPD) is a US federal agency .

Organization and task

The Federal public defender reports to the United States Department of Justice . The organization has its own local department for each judicial district, headed by a chief federal public defender . He is appointed for a term of four years by the locally competent United States Court of Appeals . There are 81 local offices operating in 91 of the 94 judicial districts, serving 3,100 lawyers and their auxiliaries.
