In 2014, Turkmenistan had a rail network of 4,980 km and was 37th in the world rankings of the International Union of Railways . The main railway lines run along the northern and southern borders.

The Tejen - Sarahs - Mashhad railway line , which was built by Turkmenistan and Iran in 1996 , links Central Asian , Russian and European railway networks with South Asia and the Persian Gulf . In February 2006, the final construction phase of the Trans-Karakum Railway , a direct connection from Ashgabat to Daşoguz , began, which will cut the travel time of the north-south connection in half.

Bereket station is an important hub of the Trans-Caspian Railway and the international north-south transport corridor . There is a modern train station and a depot that can service 210 diesel locomotives per year.

The route Türkmenabat - Aşgabat -Bereket- Türkmenbaşy is double-track in sections, the rest of the network is single-track. There is no electrification.

The Kazakhstan – Turkmenistan – Iran connection is part of the international north-south transport corridor, a 677-kilometer single-track railway that connects Shangaosen in Kazakhstan via Bereket and Etrek in Turkmenistan with Gorgan in Iran. In Iran there will be connections to the ports of the Persian Gulf. The project has a budget of US $ 620 million raised by the governments of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran and the Asian Development Bank . The connection should be inaugurated in May 2013. The northernmost section of the Usen - Serhetyaka route, including the intersection between the North-South Railway and the East-West Railway in Bereket, was inaugurated in May 2013. A shorter standard-gauge line from Gorgan to the Iranian border was opened in the same month. The Turkmen section of the 925 kilometer Usen – Serhetyaka – Bereket – Etrek – Gorgan section, which includes 140 kilometers in Kazakhstan and 85 kilometers in Iran, was decided in 2007, built since 2009 and officially opened on December 3, 2014. The route enables a direct rail link to the Caspian Sea . Most of the route has a gauge of 1,520 mm with a gauge change at the Iranian border.

Connections to Afghanistan

In 1960 the USSR built a cross-border railroad to Towraghondi in Afghanistan, but it had little traffic. It was restored in 2007. In 2013 work began on a second international connection from Kerki via Imamnazar on the border to Aqina in Afghanistan. The 85-kilometer stretch from Kerki in Turkmenistan to the Afghan border at Ymamnazar and 3 km further to the Afghan customs post in Akina was officially opened on November 28, 2016 by Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani . It is to be extended by 38 kilometers to Andchoi and become part of the connection between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan , connecting with Tajikistan via Sher Khan Bandar , Mazar-e Sharif and Kunduz .
