The fine Striped ground beetle ( Carabus monilis ) is a beetle from the family of ground beetles (Carabidae).

features

The beetles have a body length of 17 to 32 millimeters. Their slightly arched body is very variable in bronze, green or blue. The antennae and legs are black in most individuals, only in the mountain form the thighs ( femora ) are colored red. The upper wings have two conspicuous chain stripes, between which there are three clearly defined secondary stripes, which are not interrupted by dots even at the tip. Tertiary stripes are only indistinct and often almost invisible. This distinguishes the species from the similar striped ground beetle ( Carabus scheidleri ), which has no chain stripes. In addition, its pronotum is narrower and more clearly heart-shaped at the base. The blue color variant can be confused with the blue-violet forest beetle ( Carabus problematicus ).

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed in western, western central and northern Europe to the south of Norway as well as on the British Isles and Ireland. It inhabits meadows, fields, moist forests and floodplains, but also gardens from the plains to the mountains at altitudes of around 2500 meters. The species occurs frequently in places. Their range is separated by a wide gap from that of the similar striped ground beetle, which occurs further to the east.

Way of life

The beetles appear from June to August. They are nocturnal and predatorily feed on insects, but also on fresh carrion. The larvae overwinter.
