features

Scheidler's ground beetle ( Carabus scheidleri )

Scheidler's ground beetle reaches a body length of 25 to 35 millimeters and is one of the largest species of beetle in Europe. Its body color is very variable, whereby the wing covers ( elytra ) and the pronotum can be bright blue to blue-black, copper-colored or brown. The elytra are ribbed uniformly and have no rows of chains . However, the strips can be divided into areas of different lengths by elytric points.

The finely-striped ground beetle ( Carabus monilis ) is a similar species , but it has chain stripes and a less narrowed pronotum .

distribution

The beetle is distributed over large areas of Eastern and Southeastern Europe from Poland and the Czech Republic to Southeastern Europe to Germany in eastern Bavaria.

Way of life

Scheidler's ground beetle lives mainly in forests, floodplains, fields with loamy soil and in vineyards. It is nocturnal and occasionally diurnal and hunts on the ground and in low vegetation.
