The cycle path has a total length of around 30 kilometers and initially leads from the train station through the urban area of Weimar. The actual starting point is at the main building of the Bauhaus University in Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 8. The painter set up his studio from 1906 to 1914 in the nearby Bauhausstraße 7a. The route now leads over Humboldtstrasse to the Feininger family home at Gutenbergstrasse 16.

From there it goes to the suburbs - first to Niedergrunstedt , then Gelmeroda , Possendorf , Vollersroda , Oettern , Mellingen , Taubach and Oberweimar .

The well-signposted Feininger bike tour is equipped with glass displays at the individual stations, which usually depict the Feininger painting of the respective village church with a direct view of the original. The church in Gelmeroda also houses an exhibition on the work of Lyonel Feininger and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In Weimar there is also the option of connecting to the Thuringian chain of cities and the Ilmtal cycle path .
