The field service mark for the 1849 campaign was donated on June 4, 1850 by Landgrave Ferdinand von Hessen-Homburg and was awarded to all members of the Hessen-Homburg rifle company, which took part in the Schleswig-Holstein War on the side of the German Confederation in 1849 . The 200-man contingent marched north on April 28, 1849, and performed field guard duty there .

The award is a round medal made of bronze with a rim. On the front there is a wreath tied at the bottom with a double bow, which is made of oak leaves on the right and bay leaves on the left. In the middle the curved letter "F" (for Ferdinand), above a stylized crown. Below that, in two lines, is GESTIFTET AM / 4 JUNE 1850 . Also on the back is the oak / laurel wreath and centered the four-line inscription FOR / TREUEN / DIENST / IM / WARE . The field service badge was designed by the Darmstadt medalist Christian Schnitzspahn.

The award was worn on a white, red and white ribbon with narrow red stripes on the left side of the chest.
