history

The church was donated in 1642 by King Ladislaus IV Vasa for the Piarists and taken over by them in 1651. The church was sacked and burned down by the Swedes during the Battle of Warsaw in 1656. King John II Casimir already made the decision to rebuild the church. However, it could only be consecrated again in 1701 after it was rebuilt by Giacomo Giuseppe Fontana . The altarpieces were created by Szymon Czechowicz and Johann Gottlieb Plersch . Since 1834 the building was used as an Orthodox church and accordingly rebuilt in the years 1835-1837 with tower domes in the Russian-Byzantine style by Antonio Corazzi and Andrzej Gołoński . After the occupation of Warsaw by the Axis Powers in World War I, the church was returned to the Roman Catholic Church in 1916. In the years 1923–1927, it was dismantled in the classical style by Oskar Sosnowski . The church was significantly damaged during World War II and was rebuilt by Leon Suzin until 1960 . In 1991 she was handed over to the Polish Army.
