The Felix Aguilar Observatory (Spanish Observatorio Félix Aguilar , OAFA) is a traditional observatory in La Plata / Argentina . The observatory was named after Félix Aguilar (1884-1943), an Argentine astronomer and engineer who was director of the La Plata Astronomical Observatory from 1919 to 1921 and from 1934 until his death . At his suggestion, the German astronomer Alexander Wilkens (1881–1968) came to the observatory in La Plata from Breslau and Munich in 1937 .

Discovered on October 10, 1974, about 53 kilometers in size, the asteroid of the main outer belt (2311) El Leoncito was named after the observatory.

Together with the Yale -Columbia Southern Observatory , a branch, the El Leoncito Observatory , was founded, which from 1965 carried out a survey of the southern hemisphere . The main instrument consisted of two large refractors , each with a 51 cm opening , which form a double astrograph .

It is located in El Leoncito National Park ( Parque Nacional El Leoncito , 31 ° 48 ′  S , 69 ° 20 ′  W ), two kilometers east of the Leoncito astronomical facility in the province of San Juan and has the IAU observatory code 808.

It was renamed Observatorio Carlos Cesco in 1990 in honor of the astronomer Carlos Ulrrico Cesco who died in 1987 . The Minor Planet Center credits the observatory with numerous asteroid discoveries . It also has a newer 76 cm reflector telescope .
