Spread of rock art in Sweden

The rock painting in Stor-Åbodsjön in Örnsköldsvik in Ångermanland in Sweden is on the northeast side of the lake Stor-Åbodsjön on a boulder just a few meters from the beach. The picture is badly damaged and the color has faded in several places.

Rock painting in Stor-Åbodsjön

The rock paintings ( Swedish Hällbilder or Hällmålningar ) in Sweden are applied to almost vertical, somewhat overhanging rock walls and boulders that protect the picture from weathering. They are mostly located near lakes and rivers, in some cases in forests, but also there near water. The pictures were mostly painted with red ocher . The most common motif is the moose .

The block is cube-shaped with sides about three feet long. The image shows a rock about 1.1 meter elk in the X-style with an inner body pattern on a longitudinal center line, adjoin the obliquely angled lines. The head has vertical lines and typically large ears. A line perpendicular to the head can be interpreted as a horn or a killing weapon. On the back of the elk is an indefinite figure.

The picture became known when Gustaf Hallström (1880–1962) published the first article about it in 1942. The investigation was carried out by Hallström from a boat, as the painting faces the lake and cannot be seen from the beach. Several Stone Age settlements have been found around this lake, Lill-Åbodsjön and nearby Hinnsjön . Around 2000 BC The Stor-Åbodsjön was about 10.0 kilometers from the Baltic coast.

The block was raised 60 centimeters in 1970 and placed on a concrete foundation.
