Hindhammar

The rock carvings from Honnhammarneset (also Hinna) are located on Tingvollfjorden in Tingvoll in Fylke Møre og Romsdal in Norway . The rock painting ( Swedish Hällmålningen ) is on a steep rock face by the sea.

These petroglyphs are different from other works of art in Scandinavia , as they are not carved in the rock carvings are, but under the overhanging rocks painted were.

Demarcation

If the motifs are scratched, pecked, ground in or engraved, one speaks of petroglyphs or engravings. The delimitation is independent of the fact that the reliefs carved into the rock in the case of petroglyphs were in many cases also painted in with color. Because of the frequent rainfall, rock paintings in Central and Northern Europe were mainly applied as petroglyphs, such as the rock paintings of the Nordic Bronze Age (e.g. rock carvings from Himmelstalund ) or the alpine rock paintings of Valcamonica .

Based on the design, the archaeologists differentiate between carvings by the arable farmers and those by hunters and gatherers such as those by Honnhammarneset. The rock art at Honnhammarneset consists of four images of fish, probably salmon , and the remainder of another species of fish. The pictures are about one meter long and 40 cm wide. They have been painted with a kind of red paint. It is believed that the rock art dates back to the Stone Age (around 4000 BC). Even today, the sea below the rock art is a popular place for salmon fishing.

There are also two holes, almost oversized bowls , on the rock face , but it is not certain whether they were artificial or natural.
