Šaunštejn (German Schauenstein , also Hohenleipa robbery castle ) is a rock castle near Vysoká Lípa (Hohenleipa) in Bohemian Switzerland in the Czech Republic . Today only a few remains of the castle are preserved.
history
The castle was built at the end of the 14th century to protect the Old Bohemian Road , a trade route from Bohemia to Lusatia , by the Berken von Duba from Lípa . The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1431. From 1435 it belonged to the Wartenbergers , who used it as a base for raids. In the 15th century it was besieged several times by the Wettins and the Upper Lusatian Six Cities League and finally destroyed.
The foundations of the wooden superstructures, some chiseled rooms, the cistern and numerous rock carvings (including crosses, faces, deer with crucifix) are still preserved from the castle complex.
view
In good weather, the view extends from the Kaltenberg , the Lausche , the Rosenberg , over the Hohe Schneeberg to the Ore Mountains .

The rock castle is located approx. 800 meters north of Vysoká Lípa (Hohenleipa) and can only be reached on foot. Access is via two marked hiking trails (yellow line and red line) from Vysoká Lípa or from Mezní Louka ( Rainwiese ) or Jetřichovice ( Dittersbach ).
