The rock grave of Luzzanas (locally also called "Tomba del Labirinto") is located in the district of San Saturnino near Benetutti in the province of Sassari on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia . Luzzanas is located in the limestone outcrops north of the confluence of the Rio Mannu with the Tirso, not far from the Roman bath "Therme Aurora".

Luzzanas

It is known for the incised labyrinths and spirals that Ercole Contu (1924–2018) published in 1965 and has since been the subject of discussions, especially regarding the age of the incisions and the unusual additional lines in the extension of the access. The facility has not yet been completely excavated as it has been partially filled with rubble and earth and is occasionally flooded. Luzzanas consists of four or more interconnected chambers.

context

There are over 10,000 rock tombs called Domus de Janas (Houses of the Fairies) in Sardinia . They often consist of a collection of chambers carved into the limestone with stone tools . They were made between 3400 and 2500 BC. Created by the carriers of the Ozieri culture . The systems were used secondary by the subsequent cultures up to the early Christian period and were sometimes expanded or rebuilt. This means that the age of the labyrinth - which is sometimes considered to be one of the oldest representations - cannot be determined with certainty.

Nearby are the Domus de Janas of Montrigu Lolloe and Sos Molimentos .
