Femme au béret et à la robe quadrillée (Marie-Thérèse Walter) ( French woman with beret and checkered dress (Marie-Thérèse Walter) ) is the title of a painting by the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso .

History of origin

The picture can be assigned to a late phase of Picasso's creative work . It emerged between an engagement with surrealism that lasted until the mid-1930s and late work, which is commonly classified as post-1945. In the same year as Femme au béret et à la robe quadrillée , which Picasso painted on December 4, 1937, one of Picasso's most famous works, Guernica, was created .

Picasso's paintings often featured women as the motif of his pictures. The painting was created at a time when two women played an important role in the life of the Spanish painter and sculptor: Marie-Thérèse Walter and his new lover Dora Maar . The picture is interpreted accordingly: a shadow is visible behind the woman who can be seen in the middle of the portrait and represents Marie-Thérèse Walter. This is interpreted either as Dora Maar and thus as an expression of feelings for both women or as a self-portrait. The following quote is ascribed to Picasso himself:

"It must be painful for a girl to see in a painting that she is on the way out."

"It must be painful for a girl to see in a painting that she is about to be dumped."
