Window cleaning robots , including window cleaning robots and window robots , are household robots that can independently clean glass surfaces such as windows or mirrors .

This type of window cleaning robot has been around since the late 2000s. They represent a form of the service robot in everyday life .

Commercial products

Commercial window cleaning robots are available in a square shape with an edge length of approx. 30 cm, such as the Ecovacs Winbot series, or with two round wipers with a diameter of approx. 10 cm from Sichler attached to each other . These robots attach themselves to the window and also have a safety rope to avoid falling. All devices also have a rechargeable battery with them so that they do not fall off the window in the event of a power failure.

A remote control is usually supplied with the device , with which the window cleaning robot can be moved on the pane. This is useful if the robot stops in the middle of the window after cleaning or if the cleaning program should be started again. In addition, cleaning can be controlled manually with it.

Advantages and disadvantages

The most significant benefit lies in outsourcing the cleaning process to the robot. Except for the placement and removal of the device, a window cleaning robot works autonomously and there is added value in terms of time savings and effort. The corner cleaning that is not yet fully developed marks the most significant weak point.

Use

  • Outsourcing the work saves effort
  • No physical exertion when cleaning windows
  • Predestined for high areas with poor accessibility
  • No danger from using ladders
  • The device is secured with a rope and an emergency power battery
  • Sensor detects glass pane, frame and abyss
  • Selective cleaning possible through manual control via remote control

Weak points

  • acquisition cost
  • Rework in the corners is not excluded
  • Getting used to it
  • Cleaning is not as quick as by human hands

Non-commercial systems

In addition to commercial systems, the cleaning of window panes is also used as a complex application example for universal service robots. Various technologies can be researched and combined, such as sensitive interaction with the environment, image recognition , trajectory generation or artificial intelligence . A humanoid system that can already successfully clean windows autonomously is the Rollin 'Justin robot .
