Archbishop Feofan ( Feofan , Russian Феофан , secular Oleg Ivanovich Galinski Russian Олег Иванович Галинский8. July 1954 in Bila Tserkva , Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic ; † 11. September 2017 in Berlin ) was Russian Orthodox Archbishop of Berlin and Germany .

Career

After studying at the Chemical and Technological Institute of Dnepropetrovsk, Feofan entered the Spiritual Seminary in 1972 and later the Spiritual Academy in Leningrad , from which he graduated in 1977. On January 4, 1976 he was ordained a monk, three days later he was ordained a monk deacon and on April 17, 1977 he was ordained a monk priest . He then attended the Eastern Church Institute in Regensburg for three years . Due to his in-depth knowledge of the ecclesiastical typicon and theological disciplines, he was elected Secretary of the Council of the Leningrad Spiritual Academy in 1980 and appointed to the chair of liturgy.

After his elevation to Archimandrite on February 14, 1985, he was ordained bishop on January 11, 1987 and he worked as (titular) bishop of Kaschira in the diocese of Moscow.

1985 began his service in the field of church external contacts, as a result of which he was appointed deputy chairman of the church external office by decision of the synod of February 7, 1986. From 1988 to 1990 he was head of the Russian Orthodox Church in Czechoslovakia in Karlsbad .

From January 31, 1991 he was Bishop of Berlin and Leipzig. After the unification of the three German dioceses to form the Berlin Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church on December 23, 1992, he became its first head as Bishop of Berlin and Germany. On February 23, 1996, Patriarch Alexius II raised him to Archbishopric .

Archbishop Feofan died in Berlin on September 11, 2017 after a long and serious illness.
