Preface

Carl Ferdinand Eduard Haasenstein (born February 13, 1828 in Gräfentonna (Thuringia), † May 22, 1901 in Birkenwerder near Berlin) was a German bookseller and founder of the first advertising expedition in Europe, the forerunner of the later advertising agencies .

Life

Ferdinand Haasenstein learned the book trade in Erfurt from 1845 to 1848. At 26 he opened his own bookstore in Altona . In February 1855 he founded the "Ferdinand Haasenstein advertisement expedition". The advertising expedition was the first company to be systematically active in the field of advertising . Haasenstein's example soon found numerous imitators and eventually led to modern advertising firms and agencies. Together with the former farmer Adolf Vogler († 1899), Haasenstein's agency was continued as an open trading company from 1858 under the company name Haasenstein & Vogler. Haasenstein himself directed the organization, which was gradually spreading across Germany, first from Altona, then fromLeipzig and from 1888 from Berlin . In 1866, Haasenstein published an advertising catalog for the first time in Germany to inform customers about the range of adverts. In 1889 the company was converted into a stock corporation, in which Haasenstein was no longer managerial, but he remained chairman of the supervisory board until his death.

His final resting place is in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf .
