Ferdinand Holthausen

Ferdinand Holthausen (born September 9, 1860 in Soest , † September 19, 1956 in Wiesbaden ) was a German Anglicist and Old Germanist .

Holthausen received his doctorate in 1884 at the University of Leipzig with his work Studien zur Thidrekssaga and completed his habilitation in Heidelberg in 1885, then worked in Göttingen (1888) and Gießen (1891). In 1893 he became professor for ancient German studies at the University of Gothenburg . From 1900 until his retirement in 1925 he was full professor of English at the University of Kiel . From 1927 to 1935 he was visiting professor at the University of Frankfurt.

In research and teaching, Holthausen dealt with the entire old Germanic area around the North and Baltic Seas, his research focus was on Old English and Old Icelandic literature.
