Ferdinand Steinringer

Ferdinand Steinringer OSB (born June 9, 1796 in Klagenfurt ; † May 2, 1866 ibid) was an Austrian Benedictine and abbot of the St. Paul Abbey in Lavanttal .

Life

The son of a Klagenfurt citizen entered the St. Paul Abbey in Lavanttal in 1815, was ordained a priest in 1819 and was then a teacher at the Stiftsgymnasium. In 1840 he was elected abbot to succeed the late Meinrad Amann .

By modernizing agriculture, he succeeded in relieving the pen's heavy debt. He had several farm buildings built and the collegiate church renovated. Even a follower of the teachings of the philosopher Anton Günther , he took care of education and science. He made the monastery archive accessible, expanded the library holdings and allowed the members of the monastery to study at foreign universities. He also expanded the St. Paul Abbey High School after the Klagenfurt Lyceum was closed. He was an archbishop consistorial councilor and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order in 1860
