Sergio Barbanti

Sergio Barbanti (born August 28, 1957 in Milan ) is an Italian diplomat . He has been the Italian ambassador to Austria since 2017 .

Life

Sergio Barbanti holds a PhD in law from La Sapienza University . He is married.

Diplomatic career

In 1987 he entered the diplomatic service. At the Italian Foreign Ministry in Rome , he was first in the General Directorate for Economic Affairs, where he was responsible, among other things, for debt rescheduling matters and issues relating to African countries. His first assignment abroad was in 1990 as deputy head of mission in Zimbabwe . From 1994 he was at the embassy in Washington, DC , where he was responsible for the press and political relations with Latin America. Back in Rome, he was Deputy Head of NATO Affairs from 1998 . From 2002 to 2004 Sergio Barbanti was diplomatic advisor to the Minister of Public Administration Luigi Mazzella .

His next assignment abroad led Barbanti to Madrid , where he was Consul General from 2004 to 2009. His first assignment as an ambassador was from 2009 to 2013 as the Italian ambassador to Montenegro .

On July 11, 2017, he was appointed ambassador to Vienna , succeeding Sergio Marrapodi . Because of the national election in Austria in 2017 , Barbanti did not take office until November 2017.
