Ferdinando Bassi

Ferdinando Bassi (* 1710 in Bologna ; † 1774 ) was an Italian botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Bassi ".

Live and act

Bassi came from a merchant family, but turned to the study of natural history and was a student of Giuseppe Monti . From 1763 he was prefect for exotic and rare plants in the Botanical Garden in Bologna. He was considered one of the most important Italian botanists of his time and was in scientific exchange with Carl von Linné , among others . In addition to botany, he also dealt with physics, chemistry and paleontology, among other things.

He owned a herbarium of around 4,300 species from 1,000 genera. It is now at the University of Bologna.

Honors

The plant genera Bassia All are named after him . and Neobassia A.J. Scott from the foxtail family (Amaranthaceae).
