The United States Geological Survey mapped them using the United States Navy's own surveys and aerial photographs from 1961 to 1967. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1968 after Charles L. Ferguson, an electrician at Palmer Station in the Antarctic winter of 1965 .
