Participants of the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) stationed on the East Base on Stonington Island discovered and photographed him from the air in December 1940. In 1947 arose in the wake of the US Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947-1948) more aerial and in cooperation with the Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey were measurements made on site.
