Fernando Alves Aldeia (born October 8, 1925 , † December 20, 1993 ) was the last Portuguese governor of the overseas province of Portuguese Timor under the dictatorship of the Estado Novo .

period of service

In January 1972, Aldeia took office in Dili . Colonel Aldeia was considered a liberal officer and politician. He started building infrastructure across the country. For the first time, many villages received water pipes for fresh water supply, as well as simple schools and facilities for basic medical care. They were assigned in part by the governor himself, who traveled through the entire province by off-road vehicle or on horseback, visiting inaccessible villages whose inhabitants had never seen a European before. But despite these improvements, the system continued to be denounced as corrupt and inefficient.

On April 25, 1974, the Carnation Revolution broke out in motherland Portugal , overthrowing the dictatorship. The new government prepared the independence of the colonies. On May 2, Aldeia declared its solidarity with the revolutionary Junta de Salvação Nacional (JSN) and the Movimento das Forças Armadas (MFA) and initially remained in office. On April 23, two days before the revolution, Aldeia had sharply criticized the MFA for its radicalism in a speech. It was not until July 15, 1974 that Aldeia handed over the official duties to Lieutenant Colonel Níveo Herdade , who now headed the administration as Deputy Governor ( Governador delegate ). The handover took place at Dilis Airport . Aldeia left immediately after the ceremony. Aldeia's resignation was only accepted on September 12, and on November 14 the last governor of Portugal, Mário Lemos Pires, took office.
