Fernando Bustos (born August 1, 1944 in Mexico City , † September 23, 1979 in Tepeji del Río de Ocampo , Hidalgo ) was a Mexican football player on the position of the winger .
Life
society
At the age of 15, Bustos joined his hometown club Unión Obrera , in whose youth teams he played from 1959 to 1963.
Bustos received his first professional contract for the 1963/64 season with the second division club Cruz Azul , for which he made his debut on December 22, 1963 in a home game against Deportivo Tepic . At the end of the same season, Cruz Azul won the second division championship and made it to the Primera División , in which the team has been continuously represented since then.
Bustos was to go down as the first superstar and most successful player in the club's history of the Cementeros , with whom he won six of the eight championship titles to date between 1968/69 and 1978/79. In the 16 years between 1963 and 1979 he only played during the 1976/77 season for another club, Atlético Español , also based in the capital .
He scored his last goal on January 6, 1979 in the 4-1 victory of the Cementeros over Chivas Guadalajara in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City.
National team
Between 1967 and 1973 Bustos completed a total of 38 missions for the Mexican national team , in which he scored eleven goals. He made his international debut on January 5, 1967 in a 3-0 victory over Switzerland. He contributed his first international goal on March 12, 1967 to the 4-0 win against Trinidad and Tobago. His only brace for the national team came on May 28, 1968 in a 2-2 draw against Uruguay. He scored his last international goal on October 16, 1973 in a 2-0 win over the USA. He played his last international game on December 3, 1973 in a World Cup qualifier against Honduras, which ended 1-1.

Fernando Bustos Castañeda died on September 23, 1979 at the age of only 35 when he was involved in a serious traffic accident on the highway from Mexico City to Santiago de Querétaro not far from the city of Tepeji del Río de Ocampo in the state of Hidalgo .
