Fernando Frutuoso de Melo

Fernando Frutuoso de Melo (* 1955 in Funchal ) is a Portuguese EU official and Director General .

biography

Fernando Frutuoso de Melo studied law with a degree from the University of Lisbon in 1976. He completed several additional studies, for example in public administration at the École Solvay in Brussels in 1988/1989 and European studies in 1984/1985 at the Instituto Nacional de Administraçao in Lisbon.

Frutuoso de Melo joined the Portuguese State Administration in 1975, where he held various posts until 1986. He has been with the European Union since 1987 and has worked in various Directorates-General: initially for ten years in Directorate-General Development, then in Directorate-General Personnel and Administration, Directorate-General Enlargement and from 2009 to 2012 as Deputy Office Director of Commission President José Manuel Barroso . From November 2013 to February 2016 he headed the Directorate General for International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO).

From 1999 to 2003 he worked as a lawyer in Portugal.
