Fernando Mencherini

Fernando Mencherini (* 1949 in Fermignano , † 1997 in Cagli ) was an Italian composer .

Mencherini studied electronic music with Walter Branchi at the Conservatory of Pesaro . He received composition commissions from well-known soloists and ensembles and was awarded the Premio Bucchi for his First String Quartet in 1981 and a prize at the International Composers' Competition in Cologne in 1989.

In 1979 he wrote the Notturno for double bass for Stefano Scodanibbio , and in 1980 his first string quartet. In 1983, Yvar Mikhashoff commissioned the Tango The Second Room for piano, and in 1985 Ciro Scarponi Crazy Jay Blue for clarinet. Vortex for flute, violin, eleven strings and vibraphone was performed at the Nuova Musica Italiana in 1993 , How was it there? Edgar Varèse was written for the ensemble for winds, strings and percussion, followed by the orchestral piece Tutti i cappotti in 1993 .

In the last years of his life, Mencherini turned to music theater and ballet. He composed the short opera Sexy Sadie for the Europa Festival '95 in Ferentino as well as the ballets Operai (1993), Le zattere , Per la finestra nuova , Il meridiano (1994) and Ghirigori ovvero Io non guardo mai il cielo (1996). He also set a number of texts by Edoardo Sanguineti to music for the Laboratorio Ottantasette vocal ensemble .
