from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fernando Pablo Miteff Jr. (* around 1959 in Buenos Aires ; † April 12, 2020 in the Bronx , New York City ) was an American graffiti artist who, in the 1970s and early 1980s with the tag Nic 707 and Nic 707 OTB got known.

Life

Fernando Miteff was born the son of former professional boxer and television producer Alexis Pablo Miteff and his wife Diana. His parents were in Argentina for a year at the time of his birth before moving back to New York. Fernando Miteff then grew up in Morrisania , Bronx, and began spraying graffiti on subways in 1973. Initially it was tagged under Stine 167 and Tuc 2 , from 1974 as Nic 707 . At 16, Miteff was the founder of the Out To Bomb Crew (also known as OTB or Only The Best ) and influenced sprayers like NOC 167 and Serve . He is considered an early style master in New York's graffiti and sprayer scene. His career as a graffiti artist was first ended by his mother throwing his material away. He was 19 years old at the time. His graffiti was a common sight in New York City in the 1970s and 1980s. His art was seen in the film The Warriors, among others.

Miteff then worked in various professions, from chauffeur to stand-up comedian . It was not until the 21st century that he became active again in the sprayer and graffiti scene. In 2013, he started the InstaFame Phantom Art project , which replaced advertising on the New York City subway with works by him and other well-known graffiti artists. Works by Nic 707 were shown, for example, in Gallery 69 in Manhattan , or the AARP-sponsored exhibition Lasting Legacy: The Journey of YOU 2013. However, he was known for simply giving away sketches and drafts.

He died at the age of 60 in his apartment during the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City of complications from SARS-CoV-2 infection.
