The Volta district heating power plant is a district heating power plant in Basel , Switzerland, which was completed in 1980 . The 100 meter high chimney is the fifth tallest structure in Basel. The district heating power plant was designed by the Himmelsbach architectural office and named after Alessandro Volta .
The Volta district heating power station provides peak loads in the Basel district heating network . The base load is provided by the waste incineration plant in Basel. Since the renovation in 2007, the Volta district heating power station has also been used to generate electricity, with operation being heat-driven, i.e. electricity is only generated when district heating is also required. The district heating plant uses natural gas as fuel .
The combined heat and power plant is only operated during the heating season . It then generates 80 MW to 90 MW heat output and 20 MW electrical output. The power plant covers around a tenth of the energy requirements of the city of Basel during the heating season.
