Cistercian Abbey of Lieu-Dieu

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey of Lieu-Dieu (also: Lieu Dieu ) was a French monastery of the Cistercian women from 1180 to 1790 , first in Marey-lès-Fussey, Canton of Nuits-Saint-Georges , from 1636 in Beaune , Département Côte-d'Or , Archbishopric Dijon . The monastery should not be confused with the former Cistercian Abbey of Lieudieu or the former Premonstratensian Abbey of Lieu-Dieu in Jard-sur-Mer .

history

The nunnery of Lieu-Dieu ("God's place") founded north of Beaune in 1180 was subordinate to the Tart Abbey . The most important patroness was the wife of Duke Odo III. (Burgundy) , Alix von Vergy (1182–1252). The convent moved from its original location in Lieu-Dieu des Champs in Marey-lès-Fussey to the city of Beaune in 1636 and was dissolved there in 1791 by the French Revolution . The few remains of buildings in Marey-lès-Fussey are insignificant.
